Spectrum Tunable Lighting Systems for Visual and Non-visual Research and Applications

Spectrum Tunable Lighting Systems are now used for both conventional light and lighting research, as well as other industrial and research applications. These lighting systems comprise multiple LEDs that can each be individually controlled to derive precise spectra over a wide wavelength range. They can be used to match a given spectrum such as a CIE illuminant, and to design a light source for a particular, visual application. In general, a set of colour or health-related quality parameters can be defined and then optimized for each specific application.

The main goal of this tutorial is to describe the concept and performance of these systems by discussing the research behind their design and application. The important colour appearance and health-related parameters used to control the systems will be introduced, followed by some examples from light and lighting research. Finally, a wide range of applications and their desired performance will be discussed.

The targeted audience is colour and lighting researchers, and light and lighting engineers at any level; particular those from Asian countries including China, Korea, Japan and Taiwan are invited to attend.

The tutorial will be given by four very experienced lecturers: Yoshi Ohno, Steve Paolini, Josep Carreras and Ming Ronnier Luo.

Introduction of the components for the colour and well-being quality cycle using STLS. Examples from various visual and non-visual research projects will be given, including the design of indoor, health centric, human and sensor inspection lightings, and the performance evaluation of the STLS.

 

Tutorial 1 Lecturer Biography

Yoshi Ohno received his PhD in engineering from Kyoto University, Japan. He joined NIST in 1992. He served as Group Leader for Optical Sensor Group and Lighting and Color Group from 2003 to 2012, and is now a NIST Fellow. He served as CIE Division 2 Director (2007-2011), VP-Technical (2011-2015) and now serves as CIE President (2015-2019). He chaired CIE TC 2-71 that produced CIE S 025 (Test method for LED lamps, LED luminaires, and LED modules) and several other TCs.  He is Fellow of IES, and is known as the primary author of IES LM-79 and ANSI C78.377 (Chromaticity Specifications of SSL products). He is also active in research of color quality of light sources and in color-related CIE TCs in Division 1.

Steve Paolini joined Hewlett Packard, Optoelectronics Division in 1981. While at HP he held a variety of engineering and management positions in California, Japan, and Malaysia. In 2000 he joined Philips Lumileds as a founding member. In 2007 he founded Telelumen, where he is currently the President. He was also the CTO at Lunera Lighting and the CTO of NEXT Lighting. He speaks frequently on a variety of topics related to solid state lighting and holds 21 issued patents.
Education: BSEE '81, Penn State University.

Josep Carreras, PhD, is the President and CTO of LEDMOTIVE, a company designing and fabricating spectrally-tunable LED engines of lighting OEMs in different markets. He received his PhD. in Physics from the University of Barcelona in 2007. He holds more than 40 articles in peer-reviewed Journals and several patents in optics and photonics. He has been actively working in research projects related to lighting and photonics as well as in the physics underlying color science and technology. He was a member of CIE TC1-90 and has served as principal coordinator of serveral initiatives related to SLL, such as EU supported HI-LED projects (http://hi-led.eu) and LED4Art (refurbishment of the Sistine Chapel lighting in the Vatican).

Ming Ronnier Luo, PhD, is a Global Expertise Professor at the College of Optical Science and Technology, Zhejiang University (China), a professor at the National Taiwan University of Science and Technology, and a Visiting Professor of Colour Science and Imaging, University of Leeds (UK). He is also the CIE Vice-President of Publication, and the Chief-Scientist of the Thousand Lights Lighting Ltd, China. He received his PhD in 1986 at the University of Bradford in the field of colour science. He has published over 600 publications. He is a Fellow of the Society for Imaging Science and Technology (IS&T), and the Society of Dyers and Colourists (SDC). He received numerous awards for his research in colour science and technology including the most recent AIC 2017 Judd Award.

Healthful Lighting- Harmful Effects of Optical Radiation

Humans evolved under light from the sun. Too much sunlight was known to cause sunburn. Staring at the sun was known to cause eye injuries. As artificial lighting developed, there were concerns about potential adverse health effects. Therefore, guidance and standards were developed to ensure that people were not at risk. This tutorial will consider the development and application of action spectra for various adverse health effects, and how these can be applied to lighting – especially LEDs.

  • Understand the development of action spectra for various adverse health effects
  • Understand how action spectra are applied in practice
  • Apply guidance and standards for photobiological safety
  • Recognize lighting technologies that have caused concerns for human health
  • Compare LEDs with other light sources, including the sky

 

Tutorial 2 Lecturer Biography

John O’Hagan, PhD, is Director of CIE Division 6 “Photobiology and Photochemistry”. He heads the Laser and Optical Radiation Dosimetry Group at Public Health England. The Group provides advice to the UK Government on issues covering the beneficial and detrimental effects of optical radiation on people. John is also a member of the Scientific Expert Group of the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection, an adviser to the World Health Organization and is a Visiting Professor at Loughborough University in the UK.

Light is a potent stimulus for regulating human physiology and behavior. Light can restore health in clinical applications, such as treating winter depression and some sleep disorders.  Healthy people may benefit from light therapy to resolve circadian and sleep disruption associated with intercontinental jet travel, shift work and spaceflight. A new solid-state lighting system has been developed for the International Space Station intended to support astronauts’ vision as well as their sleep, health and performance. These advanced lighting technologies open the door to innovative architectural applications in public facilities, work places and homes.

  • Understand how light activates biological and behavioral responses in healthy humans
  • Appreciate the use of light as a clinical intervention for specific affective and sleep disorders
  • Appreciate how light is being applied in non-clinical applications intended to improve health and well-being in public facilities, work places and homes

 

Tutorial 3 Lecturer Biography

George Brainard, PhD, has studied the effects of light on the biology and behavior of animals and humans for more than 35 years. His research has been widely supported by public, industrial, and private sources. He has published more than 100 original research articles, authored more than 50 book chapters, and edited or co-written twelve books or monographs, including four lighting standards for the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America (IESNA). Dr. Brainard has been the US Division Six director for the International Commission on Illumination (USNC/CIE) since 1992, chaired the IESNA Photobiology Committee for 10 years, and is currently chair of the IESNA Light and Health Committee. His research team has developed and tested advanced lighting designs for treating patients with winter depression. They are currently working on lighting for the International Space Station and other, future space habitats.  Recently he has been honored with the NASA’s prestigious Johnson Space Center Director’s Innovation Award.

Current and Future Practices of Roadway Lighting

This workshop will discuss the current trends in roadway lighting including Safety, Health, Trespass, Color and Visibility. The workshop will also focus specifically on connected and adaptive lighting with a discussion on Smart City applications.

Tutorial 4 Lecturer Biography

Ron Gibbons, PhD, is the Director of the Center for Infrastructure Based Safety Systems at the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute (VTTI). He is also the Institute’s lead lighting research scientist.  Dr. Gibbons is responsible for lighting- and visibility-associated research projects and projects which consider roadway safety as they relate to lighting.  He is currently the PI on projects investigating the Spectral Effects of new light sources on roadways, the visibility of police vehicles and adaptive lighting of roadways. Dr. Gibbons is also the PI and Project Manager for a safety IDIQ project sponsored by the Federal Highway Administration, a subject matter expert for the National Surface Transportation Safety Center of Excellence and it’s a proven project manager.  Gibbons is the author of over 40 published papers on roadway lighting, photometry, and target visibility. He is the last Director of Division 4 of the International Commission on Illumination (CIE) and a past President of the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America.
